Operations self-assessment: where is your company losing money?

Fifteen questions about how your operation runs on an ordinary Tuesday, not how it should run. At the end you will know in which areas money is slipping away, and you can put a price on the task that costs you most.

1. Workflow

01Orders, lorries, pallets or files sit idle waiting for someone to do something.
02The same data is typed in more than once: on the order, in a spreadsheet, on the delivery note, on the invoice.
03Some tasks are done «because it has always been done that way» and nobody can explain what they are for.

2. Data and decisions

04Key figures (profitability per customer, costs, shrinkage) arrive at the end of the month or quarter.
05Important decisions are made by gut feeling or experience, without any data to hand.
06Two people in the company give different figures for the same question.

3. People and dependencies

07There is someone without whom part of the operation grinds to a halt.
08There is a critical spreadsheet that only one person understands.
09The team spends time every week looking for information, paperwork or goods.

4. Systems

10The software you use (orders, warehouse, invoicing) does not talk to each other, and someone bridges the gap by hand.
11A tool was bought that is now barely used or used badly.
12To find out how something is going, you have to ask someone instead of checking a system.

5. Customers and payment

13More than three days pass between delivering the service or product and issuing the invoice.
14Charges that should be invoiced slip through: waiting time, extras, incidents, additional freight.
15You find out about problems when the customer calls, not before.
Frequently asked questions

What does this self-assessment measure?

It measures the most common signs that an operation is losing money: work standing still, data typed in twice, decisions without data, reliance on specific people, software that does not talk to each other, and late invoicing.

Does it work for any company?

It is designed for companies with physical operations: transport, logistics, warehousing and agri-food. The questions make sense in any company with orders, deliveries and invoices.

How is it different from the Operations Diagnostic?

The self-assessment tells you whether there are losses and in which area. We carry out the Operations Diagnostic ourselves over four weeks: we measure what each problem costs, what to fix first and with what investment.
